Madame Brussels AKA Caroline Hodgson was turning tricks in ‘Little Lon’ – the red light district of Melbourne during the late 19th Century. Little Lon bordered by Lonsdale St, Spring St, Exhibition St & Latrobe St. This under privileged area was notorious for prostitution and petty crime. Described by evangelist Henry Varley "a loathsome centre in which crime, gambling hells, opium dens and degraded Chinese abound, and where hundred of licentious and horribly debased men and women are herded like swine". These days there is minimal evidence of the place that once was, with many existing building demolished in the 1950’
