I‘ve always wanted to play Mahjong. Enamoured by its tradition and out of respect I remain a spectator of this curious ancient game. So rich in history, not to mention it’s complexities – it’s best to leave it to the masters. My Mother in Law, I consider one of these masters. I watch her and her friends sitting around the old card table in the lounge room for hours sharing tea and tales, many many tales. The rickety table brought to life, laden with cups of tea, small plates of tempting tasty treats and in the centre an elegant construction of ivory coloured sleek porcelain tiles. Each tile bearing an intricately carved image of a flower, a dragon or a Chinese character. As I watch, I try following the rules, so many rules. I note similarities to Gin rummy only in this game you collect pongs, kongs and chows.
