The term ‘Gringo’ has a varied history with many theories on how it came about and what it’s true deifinition is. Evidence shows that it may date back to 1787 as a term used by Spanish for foreigners with a certain accent, particularly Irish. Then there the urban legends that suggest it derived from the Mexican Revolution – from a broken English phrase; ‘Green go’ – a directive to the American army in their green uniforms to leave. Over time this once derogatory term has become an almost affectionate but still belittling label for mainly US citizens, people of European decent particularly those that are fair and blonde.
