Take a walk around any city in the world and you’re likely to stumble across a street performer.  Organ grinders, one man bands, chalk artists, fire breathers, sword swallowers, human statues and a Melbourne fav – the bucket drummer.  Street performing isn’t new in fact a painting dated 1855 by the artist Jose Rodrigues de Carvalho depicts a tired melancholy violin playing street performer.  His assumed poor hungry children draped over him as he plays.  The child in the foreground suggestively holding her hand out with desperation in her eyes.  Then there was the medicine man in the States, the Mariachi’s in Mexico, Chindonya in Japan.  An art bringing our streets to life – it has been suggested in some cities crime rates are notably lower on streets with street performers.
Next time you’re wondering the streets of your town, stop and take a moment to enjoy the offerings of the performers amongst you.
